Intelligent Valve gets more versatile

Sept. 9, 2022
Siemens’ Intelligent Valve now can be used in hydronic circuits with ethylene glycol-based antifreeze, enabling its deployment in coils in air handling units and recoolers of chiller plants.

Siemens Smart Infrastructure recently enhanced its Intelligent Valve by adding glycol capability, which enables the valve to be used with ethylene glycol-based antifreeze.

“The glycol option substantially increases the range of use cases for the Intelligent Valve,” the company said. “It extends the application range to hydronic circuits that are exposed to ambient temperatures below 0 degrees Celsius during standstill. Example applications include coils in air handling units [AHUs] or recoolers of chiller plants.”

Additionally, the Intelligent Valve’s newly integrated dynamic control changeover function allows a heat exchanger to be dispensed within the assembly of AHUs. The Intelligent Valve has two parameter sets, the company explained—one for heating and one for cooling. “This allows ideal operation in cost-effective and space-saving applications like combined coils in AHUs or combined distributions,” Siemens Smart Infrastructure said. “With its new control function for changeover applications, the Intelligent Valve automatically detects whether it is in heating or cooling mode, and optimizes quantities such as volume flow or Delta T.”

The changeover function saves engineering time and other costs at the automation level, the company pointed out. It also allows for the optimization of ventilation centers, downsizing of AHUs, and space savings.
