Furthering its reach into Canada, smart building technologies expert View, Inc. (NASDAQ: VIEW) has this fall announced the launch of its Smart Windows system into several new developments in St. Catharines, Ontario and in greater Vancouver, British Colombia.

Carlisle Square

View today announced its Smart Windows will enclose Carlisle Square, a new large-scale residential development situated in the downtown core of St. Catharines. Built by Nickel Developments, Ltd., the 200,000-square-foot, 18-story tower boasts 228 residential units, a grocery store, and other accompanying boutique shops, and "will help to elevate St. Catharines’ status as a leader in wellness and sustainability," according to the partners.

“With Carlisle Square, we wanted to encompass the vibrancy that people recognize when they think about the Niagara region,” said Nick Atalick, President of Nickel Developments. “Being in the heart of Niagara, surrounded by green landscape, it doesn’t make sense to cover the scenery with blinds when there is a superior technology that lets us harness those views to improve the health of our residents, while conserving energy. We are thrilled to have discovered View.”

View notes its Smart Windows use artificial intelligence to automatically adjust and control heat, and to eliminate glare, increasing access to natural light and reducing energy consumption from lighting and HVAC by as much as 20%, as reckoned by the firm. The windows deployment will provide residents, patrons, and employees at Carlisle Square with continuous views of Twelve Mile Creek, Lake Ontario, and the Welland Canal.

As cited by View:

Multiple studies have shown that access to daylight dramatically improves cognitive function and that clear, unobstructed views of green landscape can have a healing effect and positive impact on health and well-being. A recent study found that residents living in buildings with View Smart Windows slept 16 minutes more and experienced 11% less anxiety and 9% less stress compared to those in homes with traditional windows and blinds.

The firm said these findings were particularly important to Nickel Developments, which built Carlisle Square with both retirees and working professionals in mind, offering affordable downtown units and quick access to public transit.

Residents of Carlisle Square will be able to customize the behavior of their View Smart Windows based on personal preferences through an easy-to-use mobile app. The app allows residents to customize tinting schedules for each room in their home and to tint specific windows on-demand.

“View is working toward a future where all buildings are healthy buildings,” said Guthrie Cox, View Inc.’s president, Canada. “We’re thrilled to work with Nickel Developments to bring the benefits of View Smart Windows to residents of Carlisle Square.”

Fast + Epp installs View Smart Windows

Meanwhile in September, international structural engineering firm Fast + Epp, a global expert in mass-timber structural engineering and design, installed the View smart windows at its new mass-timber designed corporate headquarters in Vancouver, British Colombia.

According to View:

Fast + Epp built their new headquarters with sustainability and employee health and wellness in mind. The unique design of the new four-story building features a hybrid mass-timber and steel structural system with cross-laminated timber floor plates, stairwells, and elevator cores. Fast + Epp included View Smart Windows to improve the building’s energy-efficiency, maximize usable floor space, and enhance the productivity and wellbeing of Fast + Epp employees.

View notes its Smart Windows system's artificial intelligence technology automatically adjusts tint in response to outdoor conditions, while delivering significant health and wellness benefits to building occupants. As cited by the firm, a recent study found that "people working behind View Smart Windows slept an average of 37 minutes longer per night, experienced half as many headaches and were far more productive than those working behind regular windows with blinds."

“As an engineering firm, our mission is to develop structures that preserve sustainability while boosting occupant wellbeing,” commented Paul Fast, Founder and Partner, Fast + Epp. “We employed the same approach when planning our new headquarters, and the combination of View Smart Windows with the building’s mass-timber design foundation creates a state-of-the-art space for our employees in line with our legacy of delivering architectural excellence.”

Fast + Epp worked closely in partnership with design architects F2A, interior designers HCMA, contractor Companion Construction, and mass timber installers Seagate Structures for the construction of their new headquarters.

“Human health, sustainability and the built environment are strongly linked,” said View Canada president Cox. “Our technology exists to turn this connection into a positive one and it’s gratifying to see forward-looking organizations like Fast + Epp putting their employees and the planet first by including View Smart Windows in their new office designs.”

View Smart Windows transform 5-star Versante Hotel

Also in September, View announced its smart windows have been installed at the newly opened Versante Hotel, in Richmond, BC, just south of Vancouver. The five-star boutique hotel, owned by its parent company Sunwins Enterprise Ltd., is part of the International Trade Centre, an expansive mixed-use complex developed by Sunwins near the Vancouver International Airport. The complex consists of numerous new high-end retail and restaurant options, as well as two Class-A office towers.

Guests in each of Versante’s 100 luxury rooms and suites enjoy access to the View Smart Windows, which automatically adjust in response to outdoor conditions, eliminating the need for blinds and optimizing thermal comfort.

The distinctly designed rooms at the Versante Hotel feature vibrant colours with bold designs and textures in addition to lavish amenities such as freestanding soaker bathtubs that sit next to the floor-to-ceiling View Smart Windows. From their rooms, guests will be able to enjoy continuous, glare-free views of the North Shore mountains, Fraser River and Vancouver Island.

“With the Versante Hotel, we set out to raise the bar for the hospitality industry as a whole,” said David Currell, general manager for the Versante Hotel. “View Smart Windows contribute to a truly differentiated experience where guests can not only soak in spectacular views and enjoy world-class amenities, but also feel and perform at their best.”

The 14-story Versante Hotel features a full-service spa, restaurant, an outdoor pool and a 24-hour business center, as well as a state-of-the-art fitness studio. All 100 soundproofed rooms feature pillowtop beds, a double sink vanity, arched backlit mirrors, and rainforest shower.

As noted by the company, the View Smart Windows system is installed and designed into more than 92 million square feet of buildings including offices, hospitals, airports, educational facilities, hotels, and multi-family residences.

“View is on a mission is to transform buildings to enhance occupant experiences and improve human health,” concluded View Canada president Cox. “We are thrilled to bring the game-changing benefits of View Smart Windows to guests staying at the Versante Hotel.”
