Superior Essex’s PowerWise cables achieve UL’s Sustainable Intelligent Building verification

Aug. 3, 2021
The redesigned PowerWise 1G and 10G cables achieved the verification for extended-distance applications via a science-based assessment that confirms the accuracy of marketing claims.

Superior Essex recently announced it obtained UL Verification under the Sustainable Intelligent Building (SIB) Platform for use of the PowerWise Power over Ethernet (PoE) products for extended-distance applications. The company’s PowerWise 1G 4PPoE and 10G 4PPoE cables have received SIB 1G and SIB 10G UL Verification, which is an objective, science-based assessment that confirms the accuracy of marketing claims.

“In the case of PowerWise 1G and 10G 4PPoE, the cable performance has been rigorously lab-tested by UL with its bit error rate (BER) systems to provide verified distances for different applications, such as 100-Mbit/sec, 1-Gbit/sec, and 10-Gbit/sec data rates,” Superior Essex said when announcing the achievement. “This result is a copper communications cable that offers validated performance up to 160 meters dependent upon application.”

Additionally, PowerWise 1G and 10G 4PPoE cables have been redesigned with a new heat transfer element to mitigate temperature buildup and offer exceptional energy efficiency and performance, Superior Essex added. When power is delivered over copper cabling, heat is generated due to the internal resistance of the conductors over the length of the cable. This results in a loss of energy at the powered device, the company further explained. The new design reduces heat buildup along the entire length of the cable for improved bandwidth and power efficiency.

Superior Essex is reintroducing several of its PowerWise products with new features that better reflect their capabilities for today’s applications. The company explained that the family of extended-distance cables now includes the following.

  • PowerWise 1G 4PPoE—This cable is compliant to IEEE 802.3bt standards for Type 1 to Type 4 PoE. It is ideal for high-power/low-data applications that require up to 100 watts of power and up to 1 Gigabit Ethernet performance.
  • PowerWise 10G 4PPoE—PowerWise 10G 4PPoE cable is the best solution for high-data/high-power applications compared to standard Category 6A designs.
  • PowerWise Fiber—This cable is designed for premises applications where either the distance or the power requirements of the end device exceed what PoE is capable of reaching or supplying.
“PowerWise for extended distance applications delivers clear data and suitable power extending beyond 100 meters, which provides substantial savings by eliminating additional telecom rooms,” Superior Essex said. “In addition, the 22-AWG copper conductors used with PowerWise cables provide the lowest insertion loss and voltage drop to become the most reliable cabling solution on the market.”

“Today’s large and complex structures contain a multitude of devices that must be reliably connected to operate critical functions—security cameras, computers and phones, heating and cooling systems and wireless access, to name just a few,” said Brian Ensign, vice president of marketing for Superior Essex. “Our PowerWise cables offer the kind of performance that meets those data and power needs and provides the critical link for the operation of IoT devices at longer distances. We’ve set the benchmark for communications cables many times before, and with the PowerWise for extended distance applications, we’re raising the bar again.”

Superior Essex Communications cabling products are manufactured sustainably and are designed to minimize environmental impact.
